Debbie's March Tutorial & Challenge: Shaped Cards

Happy March to you! Debbie here, to share my tutorial for this month.

Do you enjoy making cards? I do, but sometimes find myself doing the same style of card over and over, usually a rectangular shaped card.  So when I received my March kits and add ons, I decided to change it up. 

I challenged myself to create 3  different shaped cards.

 
I started with the basic circle. I began by cutting out 2 same sized circles using my circle cutter. One from patterned paper, and one from purple cardstock.

  
I painted the edge of the card with some homemade glimmer glam and inked with purple ink.

 
Then came the fun part... decorating the card front with stickers and bling,  just some of the kit addons in the CC Store.

Decorate one side of the card bottom, if desired. I used a smaller circle of patterned paper, a journal spot, and a few little extras to decorate the inside.

 

Flip the card back over, decorated side down, and score the back piece approximately 1/2 inch from the top. Open the crease so the circle lies flat.

 
 
Flip over again, so that the decorated card interior is face up.                                                              Apply adhesive to the folded back area above the crease.

 
Match up the two sides, card front on top and adhere.

Now you have a card that opens nicely!

 
Next, I went searching online and found templates to print and use to make shaped cards. I found a bunch on the   Hero Arts website and on Stampington & Co. Here are the links to the two I used.

Crown Template

Onsie Template

 So for my crown...

I cut out the template and lightly traced it onto a cardstock card I had already creased and cut to size. Leave the card folded, so when you cut out your shape, you are cutting out both sides of the card. You are cutting, leaving portions of the card fold intact.

Next, trace another crown onto patterned paper. Adhere to one side of your cardstock crown card. This is your cardfront.

 
 
Now embellish as desired. I punched some circles for the points of my crown. I outlined the circles with green Stickles, then more bling. I used a pink marker to outline the card and make the whole thing more defined. Cute! 

 
Finally, a onesie card. Super cute for a birth announcement or congrats card.

 
 
 
Same steps used:

1. Cut out template.

2. Trace onto prefolded cardstock card. The shoulders / sleeves are on the fold line.

3. Embellish as desired.

Now, while I used girlish papers, you could easily adapt them for a boy. Of course the circle shape would work for any type of card.

My challenge to you is to create some shaped cards. Since this challenge will be open until April 10th, you have time to create more than one card. :0) Cards must be newly created for this challenge.  The winner will be determined by random, with each card being one chance. Stacey's Sweet & Sassy Kit Ideas

Happy Saturday!

I got to play with the Sweet & Sassy kit this month, and I had expected - really planned - to do "girly" layouts with it! But when I spread the papers out on my desk, I just knew that these Easter pictures of my youngest boy from a few years ago, would be perfect.

I am a consistently "square" scrapper, and this layout is no exception - I set up a layered square background before adding photos and journaling. The kit's Thickers have a wonderful, huge set of brackets that I placed around my journaling to keep it from floating around...

I made a strip of photos that is slightly bigger than the inner box to break up the "square-ness" just a tiny little bit.

The egg, bunny, and heart are all punches from Fiskars.

In my "Sprinkler Girl" layout, I created another square, frame-inside-a-frame design, which I broke up a little with varied sizes of half circles to make a border across the top. The outer frame is also saved from being too "perfect" by sightly overlapping the corners and intentionally slanting them a tiny bit. So...even though I like to use squares, they don't have to be boring!

When I was playing around with my scalloped border punch, trying to decide which kit paper to use for a decorative edge, I found that the scallops were really fun as a layered block! I played with the spacing and placement of colors and patterns until I was pretty happy with it.

I rarely create a layout without journaling, but I have already done a layout with the story behind these photos, so I just gave it a title and left it at that. The title uses a sticker from the Echo Park add-on sticker sheet and some old Thickers I had in my stash. At first, the white Thickers were kind of plain, but the Prima e-line crystals really added some sparkle!

I lightly sanded this butterfly and inked the edges to give it a distressed feel...all of the paper is from the Sweet & Sassy kit, and the rub-on is one I have been saving for just the right card (smile).

Kimberly's March Kit Ideas

Hello, readers. Before I get started with my kit ideas, I'd like to say a very heartfelt and humble thank you to everyone who has encouraged me throughout my son, Ryan's, illness and his recent passing.

Although I've not met any of you, you are all close in my heart, and your messages and prayers sustain me. The photos of you in red and the little "For Ryan" signs brought me to tears. And the blog post in Ryan's honor had me bawling. I am heartbroken, but blessed, too. Thank you.

One of the things I love about CC's kits is that they are small enough that I don't feel overwhelmed but full of enough stuff that I can create several projects. Even after the 5 projects I made this month, I still have enough paper left to make another layout and at least a couple of cards.

For March, I worked with the yummy "Party Time" kit, creating 3 layouts and 2 cards. And remember that little Maya Road board book that came in the kit? I've got something with that in the works, too, that I hope to be able to share with you later this month.

Today, I'm going to highlight one March project in particular, my layout titled "Hey, Sweet Boy (Mama Misses You)."

I started with the flip side of Jillibean Soup's Pasta Fagioli "Meatballs" paper. At first glance, the pale green floral print may seem very feminine, but the muted color and small size of the print makes into a great neutal paper, so it could really be used on a multitude of projects or themes.

 

I chose black and red to be my main colors to embellish with, to give the paper in a "boy" feel. The photo is a 4x6 trimmed to 4x4. To anchor the photo and make sure it got top focus, I added a slim white mat and a wider black mat. To compliment the black mat, I used black again for my title alphas and for the ribbon across the bottom.

One of the things I like to do is add an unexpected color, in this case, a rich yellow from a bit of paper ribbon and a couple of butttons. When doing this, I typically keep the new color in small amounts, just to add a pop, otherwise it becomes overwhelming and the key elements of your project (photo, journaling, etc.) lose focus.

 

I made sure the red was balanced by using it in several places and in varying amounts: the Prima flowers (most of the red), the banner (a "medium" amount of red), and in the subtitle alphas (a small amount of red). Notice how I offset the two red Primas by placing the larger one apart from the smaller, and complimenting the smaller one with a small, neutral colored one? This ensures that all of your red isn't in one place, giving visual balance to the color.

Lastly, I want to share how I made the little banner. It was very easy peasy! I used a 1" circle punch and punched half-circles from a piece of scrap kit paper. You could punch whole circles and cut them in half, but this seemed easier to me. Either way works, so do what's easiest for you. I tried to keep the pieces about the same size, but didn't worry too much if they werent.

Next, I lined them up on the page where I wanted them, leaving a tiny bit of space between them. You could have the edges touching or overlapping, too. Whatever look you like best. After placing them where I wanted them, I glued each one into place, then added a couple of rows of machine stitching across the top, to create the banner. Glueing them down before stitching is imperative, otherwise the pieces will shift during stitching. You could also hand stitch or doodle the banner "rope" or even use rub-ons. To finish up the banner, I curled up the edges just a bit with my fingernail, to add a little dimension.

Jen's Party Time Projects

And what a party it was!  Loved the mix of papers in this kit...Fancy Pants "It's Your Day" and Jillibean Soup "Pasta Fagioli".  Two totally different lines but they look fabulous together, you can make "themey" party projects or you can just scrap the everyday with this kit.

My favorite layout this month is actually using photos from Valentines Day.  My son loves bacon, so when I saw an ad in the paper for a local store selling chocolate covered bacon...guess what he got for his gift?!  I could not bring myself to try this creation...but he assures me  it's delicious.

On this layout I used both sides of the JBS "blended beans" paper, red cardstock, one of the Jenni Bowlin die cut journaling shapes and the paint dabber included in the kit.  I had to paint the alphas I used in the title with the dabber since I didn't have enough in my stash of one color.  From the CC store I picked up the Jillibean Soup Pasta Fagioli sprouts...I used three on this layout(two are layered together).  From my stash I added the kraft cardstock and some Jillibean corrugated stars.

Lately I've been adding a lot of handrawn doodles/embellishments to my pages.  On this page I added an outline to the pattern papers and cardstock heart with a brown pen.  Around the outside of the square mat I drew a very small border.

I drew it by hand with the same brown pen (American Crafts Precision Pen) and then colored it in with a brown pencil.  Just a fun little touch that pulls all the elements together.

I loved the pattern paper on this next layout, but I sometimes find something this busy hard to use.  (Usually it will sit in my stash so I can just look and drool or I just use a small piece)  This time I was determined to use it.  And I had the perfect subject...I became the mother of a teenager this month! (Yikes)  I knew I wanted to do a banner with "13" on it, so I cut out "13" from the paper...the hole is now covered by cardstock.

I think when you use a piece of paper this bold you need to ground it with some solids or a very subtle print.  I chose to use a piece of the blue cardstock in the kit and a piece of brown from my stash.  For the banner I cut a strip of paper from the FP "Hoopla" paper and then cut the strip into approx 4" segments.  I trimmed one end to create the bottom of my pennants on each piece and then cut a strip of paper from the Jillibean "meatballs" paper slightly narrower than the "hoopla" piece.  I glued a piece of the "meatball" paper to two of the pennants and glued the "13" to the other.  Then all you have to do is roll up the untrimmed end to the length you desire.  I threaded a piece of the Jillibean twine that was available in the store(sorry it's now sold out) threw the rolled section and attached to my page.  The bottom left corner has a few more Pasta Fagioli sprouts, a corrugated star(from my stash) and some Jillibean pins wrapped in twine clustered together. (you get 2 different colored pins in the kit...I used a matching pin from my stash)

Also included in this kit is a Maya Road chipboard mini album.  My plans are to make a little "artistic" album about myself. So far I've primed all my pages with white acrylic paint and completed the cover and intro page...

After painting the page white I used the paint dabber from my kit(I got blue) to make the circles.  After they dried I lightly sanded to knock down some of the edges and then outlined the circles with a black Sharpie pen.

It's a heart (obviously) made from bits of paper from the kit.  I adhered them with glue overlapping as I went.  The outside edges of the page were painted with an orange dabber that I bought in the CC store.(I think this color is sold out now).

I have to finish this page and thought of a great idea for another page.  I think this will be a fun little place to express myself through art, quotes, and pictures.  As I finish pages I will upload them to my gallery.

Oh and one last little card using papers from the kit, the pin, and some stuff from my stash...

Sarah's Sweet & Sassy Kit Ideas

Happy, happy Saturday to you!  I hope you have something fun planned for this weekend!  My birthday is tomorrow, and I have yet to hear of any plans.  Perhaps I should have dropped stronger hints...

I think that Sweet and Sassy may be my first really 'girly' kit since I joined the Design Team.  Strange, since I pretty much scrap 95% of the time about my 3 girls.  But that just tells you how versatile these kits are!  

First, my addons.  Unfortunately, they're all sold out already, except for the Thickers.

• American Crafts Dear Lizzy Enchanted Mix Tape.  I wasn't 100% sure what I was going to do with this when I bought it, but I used it on just about everything this month, and just love it.  And I still have a bunch left.

• Echo Park Little Girl alphabet stickers (I got 2 of these!) (Looks like these are gone from the store already.
• American Crafts Subway Glitter Polka Dot Thickers, Mulberry

This first layout started out as a happy accident, and I think it is one of my all time favorites.

I had cut a strip of the purple paper off to mat a photo for another layout.  I had the leftover strip laying on top of the bigger piece, and realized I could make a herringbone pattern with it (correct me if'm wrong on the name).  I've never done an 8.5x11 before, but this just fell together.  I kept it really simple and matted the 4x6 photo on the green plaid (?) paper.  I also "boosted" the color of the Thickers by spraying them with Green Metallic Maya Mist.  The heart stick pin was from my stash, but I'm pretty sure it's Maya Road.

I punched the butterfly out at the top left and backed the negative with one of the AC tags.  Then I decided to use the punched butterfly to mimc that herringbone pattern I created.  (I trimmed the decorative edge off the tag and used it on my card below).  The pink pearl on the butterfly is Basic Gray from my stash.  I also outlined the "negative" butterfly with my white pen because the edges didn't look very defined.

I just adore how this one came out, too.  I decided to use the big flower paper as a background because I was too lazy to do some fussy cutting on it.  The blue cardstock helped to "calm" the pattern down a bit.

I used my apron lace punch on this one, and also used the Martha Stewart punch set that I *think* is called "Cherish" to punch the edges on my cardstock.  Then I hand stitched the two borders.  That took a LOT longer than I thought it would.  I used purple thread on the inside border, and pink on the outside.  And look, there's some AC Mix Tape used as photo corners!  The only thing from my stash is the heart brad (Making Memories) on the tag.

This next layout started with the Mix Tape.  I knew I wanted to try using it as a "mat."  Once I got all the photos down, I started my list of "ingredients" and was trying to decide on a placement for "soup."  Originally, it was just going to be underneath the main photo, but things were just looking kind of boring.  I found a Bazzill circle stitching template in my stash, and decided a circle would really help unify things.  It still needed something extra, so I added the orange scallop from the Echo Park sticker sheet, and hand cut the patterned paper behind it.   

I also used the green Mix Tape for that Doily punch (Martha, again) underneath the butterfly brad.  I stuck down some tape on some scrap cardstock (light blue) and punched! 

And then I pulled out my Making Memories Celery paint, the same paint I used with last month's kit.  I started by just doing the edges, but then took the dry brush and swept it over the edges of my photos, and my ingredients list.

Finally, a quick birthday card.  I punched the edge of the card (yes, I am addicted) with Martha's Optic Dot punch, and then stuck the purple striped paper on the inside panel of the card (where you'd write).  The alphas are from the Echo Park sticker sheet, and me and my white pen about had it out over that outlining.  This is also where I used the scalloped part of the AC card that I trimmed earlier.

But my favorite part of the card is that flower!  I found one of the Jillibean corrugated flowers on my desk (from the CC Store) and decided to cover it with Mix Tape.  I took the tape, and laid it on the flower.  I pressed it into the first corrugation with my fingernail.  Then, hold the tap in corrugation 1 with your nail while pressing it into corrugation 2 (or else it will come unstuck).  After I got one strip of tap across, I actually pulled it back up and put some liquid glue pen on the flower to keep the tape stuck.  The edges were unsticking on me without the glue.  And that fabric brad was from my kit.

In Like a Lion, It's Time for March 3 Sketches

Is it really already March? As much as I have loved all the snow this winter, I think I am just about ready for green grass, sunny skies, and being outside without freezing. Perhaps that's why the layouts for my March 3 Sketches feature summer vacation pictures. The bright and playful patterns of the Party Time kit were just the inspiration I needed to pull out some old vacation pics (that and the fact that I am a couple of years behind!). In a few short months, my family's annual trek to the Jersey shore will be here (and by then, I will probably have had it with the heat and humidity).

One Page

The primary colors of the Party Time kit are so perfect for boardwalk and theme park pictures. All the colors blend together and make the page fun. What do you think of my clever way to use the bingo chip? It just so happened that one of the numbers matched the date of this event! And the game piece was another great take on the theme. And you will surely fall in love with the Maya Road pleated ribbon; it's been awhile since I've embraced ribbon on my pages. This stuff is so different. Love the flair!

Two Page

Just like it's been ages since I've truly played with ribbon on my pages, it's probably been just as long since I've used paint and foam stamps. Remember them? I have so many in my stash but they have been neglected for years. The Jenni Bowlin paint dabber in this kit brought my letters back to life. And dabbers are so much better than foam brushes! I'll probably use the paint on the mini book that came with this kit, too.

Journaling is a must for me on pages, so I'm always excited to see journaling pieces in the kits. Love the big circles that come with this kit but with so much going on in this two-pager using the whole circle would have been too much. So just cut it in half!

And don't be afraid to pack your pages with pictures! I really wanted to capture a night on the boardwalk with my siblings, parents, niece, and nephews. I certainly didn't use all the pics but I wanted to use enough to tell the story. I'm happy with the result.

Card

Sometimes cards just need to be simple. Little things like stamping and gems can do the trick. I just used some cardstock scraps here from last month's Blue Skies kit, my new Fiskars stamps (love them!), and Prima bling.

Contest rules: each month we will post three sketches — a 1-page layout; a 2-page layout; and a card. You may create as many projects as you wish using one, two, or all three of the sketches for the month. You don't need to create your entries with a CC kit; anything in your stash is OK.

When you have created your layout(s)/card from the sketches, you MUST:

•  Upload it to the 3 Sketches section of the CC Gallery under Contests and Challenges by the last day of the month.
•  Include "March sketch" in the title.
•  Provide a URL link of that project from the 3 Sketches section of the gallery into the thread for that sketch on the Message Board; posting the project image in the Message Board thread only does not meet the rules and won't be counted as an entry (you need not include the image in the thread; just a URL is required).

One lucky winner will receive a fun prize from CC! You must e-mail Jamie within two weeks of winner announcement in order to claim your prize.

A Pre-Valentine Treat :)

I just wanted to quickly share the Valentine garland I made to surprise Emma tomorrow:

I used February's Song Bird kit, specifically the Cosmo Cricket Blackboard Album, and covered it with a favorite kit paper, die cut some scalloped circles and added the AC Subway Glitter Polka Dot Thickers for Emma's name.  They are connected with the tulle from January's Sleigh Ride kit.  Very easy to make, it probably took me about 30 minutes, and I'm going to string it across her bathroom mirror in the morning :)

I Can See the Sunshine in Your Eyes

Hello, scrapper family! Wondering where my title came from? It is lyrics from a song by Swedish singer, Marie Glad. She has a sweet little song called "Songbirds" (hence the connection to Jamie's "Song Birds" kit) and I can't get the tune out of my head so I'm sharing it with you, too!

 

Scrap-wise, I'm going to give a little more detail about what went into one of my Song Birds projects. I know I say this frequently, but I loved working with this kit. I made two layouts, two cards, and a little bracelet from kit contents. And I still have enough material for at least two more layouts! The project I wanted to talk about today is a layout, that I titled Born To Run.

I'd like to say that creating a project is a simple and elegant process. I'd love to tell you that I just "know" exactly what I want to say and where I want to put everything, that creativity flows onto the page and masterpieces are born. But, I can't.

Mostly, I pick out the pp that appeals most to me, match it with a photo, and then agonizie over it for two or three days. Many times I do and redo and redo again before finally come up with something that I hope others will enjoy looking at.

As is typical for me, I started with a 4x6 photo, this one of my youngest boy, Daniel, taken by my daughter. (I scrap a lot of her pics.) From the time Daniel gets up in the morning, he is non-stop boy. Taking things apart, running through the house, climbing shelves ... you name it, that boy does it! I wanted to convey that in my layout, so I started with a photo of him running, which as also the basis for my title.

I didn't think that was quite enough to describe how phycially active he is, so I started writting down other words to describe what he does. That created a new challenge -- where do I put all those words? I had already painted the background and decided where to place the pics and embellies. The fabulous BasicGrey micro mono alphas were the answer, and since I'd already glued everything else down, the only place left to put them seemed to be the right side of the page.

I wasn't sure how many words I could fit, so I just started at the top and kept going, making up stuff as I went along to fill in the gaps. I tried to keep the letters mostly in line, but didn't worry to much if they weren't. When I got to his name and the words "boy wonder", I decided that they would look nice in a contrasting color. This was an afterthought and I had to pull up the "daniel logan" because I had originally done this part in red. This is end result:

Jen's Blue Skies projects

As I write this the skies are a beautiful shade of blue and the sun is shining...now if only the warmer temps would come back. Oh well....while I yearn for sunny spring days I got to play with the Blue Skies kit this month.  A great mix of papers from Echo Park Little Boy and American Crafts City Park lines and included in the kit this month was a red Glimmer Mist and some Maya Road sheer album pages!

Sandstorm

On this layout I used both the mist and one of those sheers.  I used the star shaped sheer to make a mask that I could lay on my paper and then spray with the Glimmer Mist.

  I started by laying a piece of white paper on top of my layout base and then placed my stars (the sheer & a Jillibean corrugated shape) in a pattern that I liked.  Once I liked the pattern I traced the shapes and cut them out of the paper.

I then used my Basic Grey magnetic mat to help hold down my mask and sprayed the open areas with the Glimmer Mist from the kit.  Once dry I removed the mask and outlined the shapes with a pen.  I used a yellow Jillibean Sprout from the addons this month and from my stash I used a Bazzill Just the Edge in orange. Oh yeah...the kraft cardstock was from  my stash too.

Washers

On this layout I sprayed some white cardstock with red Glimmer Mist and then cut in to my washer shapes.  From the CC store I used green Jillibean Soup sprouts and red Cosmo Cricket Tiny Type Alphas.

First Tournament

Here I used my arrow shape sheer as a template to cut a piece of the American Crafts "skyline park" paper to hold my title.  I used Basic Grey's Micro Mono & Mini Mono letter stickers for my title.  I also used a white signo pen to do a border on both my arrow & sheer star.  From the addons I used two of the AC City Park Decorative Tags.  I thought that "word" tag just summed up the girls weekend perfectly.  To create a strong vertical line I cut the light blue dots out of the Echo Park "cool stripe" paper.

Robyn's Song Bird Kit Ideas

Today it's my turn to tell you all about my projects with the February Song Birds kit.

I'll start with my favorite project with the kit...and also the one that has generated the most questions! I loved the We R Memory Keepers sewn cardstock, and the "True Love" title inspired me to create a layout about my true love: my husband, Adam. I started by tracing the chipboard heart shape onto a piece of Kraft cardstock, then cutting it out with a craft knife to create a mask. Then I laid the mask over the stitched cardstock and misted with Maya Mist (from my stash) to create the blue drop-shadow.

I covered the chipboard heart with the red polka dot paper from the kit and added the Basic Grey Take Note journaling spot, plus the kissing fishies from the Fancy Pants Love Birds Cards. I wanted the words at the bottom to pop a little more, so I used Shimmerz paint and a tiny paint brush to fill in the letters. I finished off the layout with a few embellies...Basic Grey Hopscotch Pops, a few of the Fancy Pants Elements stickers and a button and twine.

I couldn't bear to waste the Kraft cardstock with the heart cut in it, so I flipped it over and adhered the flocked heart paper onto the back so it would show through. Then I cut the Kraft into a rectangle and stitched around the edge with embroidery floss. Then I adhered it all onto the Bazzill cardstock. I fussy cut the Sending My Love paper to go along the botton.

The "love notes" and the to/from shape are both from the Fancy Pants Love Birds Cards. I was running out of places to add the journaling, so I ran it along the edges of the heart to give a little emphasis to the outline of the shape. It reads "Avery and Cecily are always leaving these little love notes on my scrapbook table. Jan 2011"

Next I decided to create some cards. I loved how the bright colored papers really popped when layered onto the Bazzill cardstock. I used the yellow damask pattern in this paper as a background for the Basic Grey Take Note acetate, then topped it with the We R Memory Keepers tag and a sewn brad. A quick card that will work for any occasion.

Next, I used the typewriter acrylic stamp on the b-side of the We R Memory Keepers paper, which was a lovely pink with a textured look. I ran a strip of the hearts behind it to tie in with the "I love you" sentiment.

Since I was on a cardmaking kick, I used a few scraps of the Fancy Pants papers, along with some of the Element Stickers in the add-on to create these two cards.

The thing I loved about this kit is that, even though the papers are perfect for Valentine's Day, they work for so many other occasions, too. Just change out the accent color, and you have a very versatile kit to work with!
